Black Economic Empowerment is a key focus area for Basil Read, and it supports the objectives of the Broad-Based Black Empowerment Act No 53 of 2003 together with the associated Codes of Good Practice.  Basil Read has been fully committed to meeting its BBBEE objectives since the inception of the DTI scorecard.  In May 2008, the company achieved a Level 4, and became a 100% contributor.  The Basil Read scorecard is driven by a Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) committee, which comprises members of its Senior Board.

The group is fully committed to its quality policy as the standard for meeting client requirements. At Basil Read, quality is a non-negotiable standard.  To this end, all employees are committed to achieving the quality objectives set out for their area of expertise.  Basil Read was the first construction company in South Africa to achieve certification for all its activities throughout all operating divisions.

Basil Read is fully compliant with the requirements of the International Standards Organisation and the Occupational Health and Safety Act, as evidenced by the Group’s ISO 9001 and OHSAS 18001 accreditation.  In January 2008 Basil Read appointed a dedicated Group Environmental Officer with the goal of developing a sound environmental program and achieving ISO 14001 accreditation by early 2010.
