The Basil Read Buildings arm, with its innovative construction techniques and turnkey solutions has become the construction solutions provider of choice in some high-profile contracts throughout South Africa. At the end of 2009, Basil Read (Pty) Ltd concluded an acquisition deal that will significantly enhance the future capabilities of its building division as it welcomed P. Gerolemou Construction / Mvela Phanda Construction and Contract Plumbing and Sanitation into the Basil Read fold. Some key projects by Basil Read include the revitalisation of several government healthcare facilities, the construction of luxury apartment complexes, and numerous prominent shopping centres throughout South Africa.

Paarl Hospital The current revitalisation of Paarl Hospital in the Western Cape is aimed towards facilitating the ability of the hospital to fulfil its role as a Level Two Hospital for the local population of the Cape Winelands. The construction of phase two began in April 2008, and all work is on schedule for completion in phases during 2010. Enhancements to the facility include: an upgraded administration block; psychiatric block; provision for a specialist out-patient department; training facilities; upgraded site security and access control; an on-site helipad for the emergency services; administrative offices; as well as renovated residential accommodation for medical and nursing staff. The contract further includes the construction of a fourth operating theatre and upgrading of existing theatres and radiography facilities as well as a fully refurbished kitchen and storage area. The final value of the project will be in the region of R 315 million. |

St Micheil’s International Leisure Estate The Basil Read Buildings and Developments Divisions are currently intimately involved in the design and construction of the St. Micheil’s International Leisure Estate, adjoining the N4 in Mpumalanga. The estate is situated on 800 hectares, which upon completion; will include prestigious homes, a luxurious hotel and shopping centre complex, a world-class golf course, as well as fly fishing and equestrian facilities. As the servicing for the area of Phase One of the development has been completed, the construction team is preparing to start work on the access road and underpass from the N4 leading to the Estate. One of St Micheil’s greatest attractions will be its ideal location and the abundance of amenities it will offer for each and every preference. Basil Read will also be involved in the construction of Phase One of the Golf Course, as well as the establishment of a nursery on site that will provide material for landscaping along the new access road. |

Natalspruit Hospital The Natalspruit hospital is an ongoing R 1.5 billion project, awarded to P. Gerolemou Construction / Mvela Phanda Construction with a scheduled completion date of November 2011 for the 760-bed facility. Despite numerous challenges hampering the construction deadline, including various changes from the client, work is progressing well on the state-funded project. |

Skilpadhek Border Post: This project, located between Botswana and South Africa in the North West Province, involves the construction of the Border Post and all ancillary building together with the associated roadworks parking, and fencing. P. Gerolemou Construction / Mvela Phanda Construction’s role on the project comprises of the civil work, project management and mentoring of HDI subcontractors. Its anticipated completion is scheduled for the end of 2010. |

New Building for Basil Read Buildings Divsion During the year 2009, Basil Read made significant progress in its strategy to grow not only organically but also through acquisition. The significant progress made during this acquisition process has facilitated the need for Basil Read to extend its base operations building. Therefore the Basil Read Building Division, coupled with the expertise of its new subsidiary company, P. Gerolemou Construction is once again involved in the construction of an additional head office building in Boksburg. That will house all Basil Reads Buildings staff. |

Gautrain Park Station and Car Park The Gautrain is part of a holistic and integrated transport plan for the Gauteng Province, which includes other public transport modes. Basil Read was appointed by Bombela Civils Joint Venture to construct the R 115 million Gautrain Park Station box and car park next to the existing Park Station in Braamfontein, Johannesburg. The underground station box is approximately 200m long, 17m wide and 17m deep, and the car park is seven storeys high. The site is located on the corner of Smith, Eloff, Wolmerans and Joubert Street in Parktown, next to the existing Johannesburg Station. This will be the last stop of the Gautrain |

Galleria Basil Read, in a Joint Venture with Murray and Roberts Construction, was the main contractor of the Galleria Shopping Centre in Umbogintwini, KwaZulu-Natal. The Galleria shopping centre is a 97 000m² shopping mall with a 76 000m² parking deck space and includes major tenants such as Woolworths, Checkers, Game, Edgars, Truworths, Mr Price Home. Eight Nu Metro Cinemas as well as an ice rink which make this brand new mall a true haven for shoppers. |

Arbour Town Value Mart The entire Arbour Town Development, which was intended to be a “mixed use” development of 200 000m² includes a residential development, offices and Value Mart shopping mall. It is valued at approximately R 1, 5 billion. Basil Read Buildings was responsible for the completion of a 40 000m² area within the mall which boasts 47 shops with major tenants such as a 12 500m² Pick ‘n Pay Hyper, Absa, Standard Bank, Toys R Us, Hi-Fi Corporation, Look & Listen and Sportsmen’s Warehouse. |

West Coast Mall Outside the town of Vredenburg on the R45 leading to Saldanha Bay on the Western coastline of South Africa, is the stylish oasis that is the Weskus (West Coast) Mall. Construction began in October 2007 and handover took place in March 2009. The R365 million development by Retail Africa promises to boost the much needed economic growth in the West Coast area. |

Baragwanath The Basil Read Building Division was awarded the Government project to construct a new day care facility at the Chris Hani Baragwanath hospital early in 2005. Construction on the facility began in October that same year and was scheduled for completion in 2009. This construction phase of the hospital included work on the ground floor, first and second floors, an ambulance bay, Accident Emergency and Trauma (AET) unit, Radiology (ground and first floor), a pharmacy (ground and first floor), a 900m long service tunnel and six plant rooms. |

The Regent The Regent can be found in the high income suburb of Morningside in Sandton, Johannesburg. The luxury residential complex was recently completed by Basil Read Buildings. The Regent is a 10-storey residential complex which houses 86 luxurious apartments and 12 triple storey Penthouses. The Regent offers private elevators to all apartments and penthouses; central air conditioning; private basement parking; a lobby, lounges and meeting rooms; a fully equipped business centre; a state-of-the-art gym; digital biometric security and in the Porte – a concierge. The roof includes a splash pool and entertainment terrace. Basil Read staff also achieved an impressive 1 500 000 LTI-free hours on the site in 2008. |

Riverwalk Office Park The Riverwalk Office Park, recently completed by P. Gerolemou Construction / Mvela Phanda Construction, consists of three separate office blocks each with three level basements of approximately 12,000m2 each and four upper levels of 700m2 each level (a total of approximately 60,000m2). |
| Basil Read Head Office Basil Read’s new head office with its unique contemporary design was completed in 2008. The design of the building centres on a three-volume atrium with all the meeting rooms looking out onto this area. The reception area on the ground-floor provides a large space for social functions. The 4 000m2 building comprises four floors of office space with a large auditorium and a fully licensed restaurant on the ground floor. Another striking element is the Koi pond in the central area, which was added as an addition to the original plans earlier this year. Although the building faces east-west, the architectural design promotes natural light, and the lifts also boast a glass front. These elements ensure an airy, spacious feel. The lower levels include basement parking as well as a gym for the enjoyment of all staff. |
