DEVELOPMENTS DIVISION

Committed to sustainability and advancement, Basil Read Developments has not only formed a reputation for its ability to carry out a number of Breaking New Ground projects, but has simultaneously developed strong expertise in the - construction, development and project management - of Integrated, Mixed Use Housing and Industrial Developments.

CURRENT PROJECTS

Cosmo City
Cosmo City is a Greenfield Development of 1 105 ha, 25 km north-west of the Johannesburg CBD, which developed out of the urgent need to provide accommodation for the informal settlers of Zevenfontein and Riverbend, who had been illegally occupying privately owned land. In response, the City of Johannesburg and the Gauteng Provincial Government – whose responsibility it was to arrange alternate accommodation for the settlers – took the bold decision to acquire land and to relocate the settlers in an integrated, mixed-use inclusionary housing development that would integrate families from different income groups in the same human settlement and would comply with the government`s policy in terms of sustainable development.

The only way to achieve this ambitious vision was to embark upon a Public Private Partnership between the Local Authority, the Provincial Government, and the Private Sector with the resources to assist. With hundreds of residents already having taken occupation, upon completion, Cosmo City will provide: 5 000 – low income houses, 3 000 – financed credit linked houses, 1 000 – social housing rental units, as well as schools, clinics, parks and recreational facilities, industrial park and environmental areas. At the end of 2009, Cosmo City's first social rental housing development, Hlanganani Gardens, was officially opened. These walk-ups will provide additional housing for tenants as well as a children's playground, a learning centre, landscaped grounds and secure courtyard parking.
Klipriver Business Park
Klipriver Business Park is situated on the highly visible and strategic R59/R550 interchange. Owing to its exceptional location and excellent road and rail network, Basil Read decided to approach the development as a business and industrial park, as it would create employment for the surrounding communities of its other Integrated Housing Developments.

Klipriver Business Park creates the Gateway to the Midvaal Industrial corridor and is designed to cater for warehousing, logistics, distribution nodes and offices.
  Savanna City
Savanna City represents one of the most significant new town developments in the Midvaal Municipality, which will comply with Basil Read Developments “Breaking New Ground” strategy. One of the key objectives of the development is to provide quality housing, sustainable services and amenities which previously were denied to a large sector of our population, due to a lack of access to mortgage finance.

Savanna City will provide a new destination for thousands of South Africans to live in an integrated, environmentally and energy aware sustainable city. Savanna City will benefit from the experience gained on projects, such as Cosmo City, to ensure that best practice principles are applied. The development of the 1 454 ha Doornkuil farm into a mixed use, integrated housing development, will include: 118 500 housing units, commercial areas, schools, light industrial areas, parks, clinics and conservational areas.
  Basil Read Green Projects
BR – Green Projects is developing energy efficient methods for all of its developments. This involves all housing units maximising natural resources and good designs to enhance living conditions without pollution. A pilot nursery has been established at Cosmo City to train and provide staff with the necessary skills to propagate trees, shrubs and vegetables to green the developments. The nursery offers Cosmo City residents free training on how to create their own organic vegetable gardens as well as how to maintain their gardens. BR-GP has also started earthworm farming to assist with waste management and organic gardening by creating vermicompost for the trees, shrubs and vegetables.
