BASIL READ ROADS DIVISION EXCEEDS THE R1 BILLION MARK… AGAIN!
Basil Read Roads will start work in mid June on the improvement and rehabilitation of the N12 from Jan Smuts / R21 to Tom Jones worth R980 million, and Roadcrete Africa will start the rehabilitation, upgrading and toll plaza construction on the R30 between Glen Lyon and Brandfort worth R330 million at the end of June. The two contracts are worth in excess of R1 billion!
R21 / Tom Jones Project Description
The N12 Section 19 is part of a dual carriage freeway that runs in an east-west direction and is a high traffic route linking the areas of Benoni, Brakpan, Boksburg and Germiston with Johannesburg to the west and Witbank to the East.
It also includes 4 interchanges, one of which is a system interchange and the other three being access interchanges. From east to west, the project consists of the Rietfontein, Rondebult, Atlas Road and the Tom Jones Interchange. These are very busy interchanges carrying traffic serving suburban, industrial and recreational areas.
The works can be summarised as follows:
- Accommodation of traffic including the construction of diversions and erection of temporary road signs and other traffic control systems
- Widening and strengthening the existing N12 Section 19 pavement with a continuously reinforced pavement 200mm Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement and both 50mm and 75mm Ultra Thin Continuously Reinforced Concreted Pavement overlain with 35mm modified asphalt premix and 20mm ultra thin friction course
- Rehabilitation of collector-distributor roads and ramps and resurfacing with continuously graded medium grade asphalt
- Improvements to surface and sub-surface drainage systems
- Strengthening works to the bridge decks such as the Atlas Road Bridge
- Demolition and reconstruction of the Trichardts Road Bridge to a four lane facility
- Adjusting the road grade line to comply with bridge clearances
- Noise barriers at certain locations along the works
- Median barrier construction and earth retaining walls
- Road furniture such as guardrails, lighting, road signage, road markings and road studs
- Landscaping and re-vegetation
- Finishing the road reserve
R30 between Glen Lyon and Brandfort Project Description
The site comprises a section of road between the Glen Lyon Interchange to the end of the Brandfort Bypass north of Brandfort. All drainage structures on this road section form part of the site. Roadcrete Africa will have 32 months to complete the project.
The work included in this contract is summarised as follows:
- Reconstruction and rehabilitation of approximately 39.6km of existing primary road R30 from the Glen Lyon Interchange to the end of the Brandfort bypass
- Upgrading of the intersections with roads S392, S382, S495, S103,R73,R703, S497 and the Majwemasweu intersection north of Brandfort
- Upgrading of approximately 36 existing culverts, work included is the following:
- Inlet/Outlet structures
- Add/remove culvert sections
- Joint repairs
- Construction of approximately 30 new culverts
- Construction of approximately 5 000m of concrete side drains and subsoil drains
- Construction of the Toll Plaza concrete apron
- Widening of 2 bridges, construction of 2 major culverts and re-construction of 2 bridges
