In 2003, Basil Read acquired a 51% controlling share in Newport Projects, founding the new group, Newport Construction.  The company is currently working on the infrastructure at the Coega Industrial Development, which mainly includes roads and bridges and several other projects in collaboration with Basil Read. Furthermore, there are two other projects in various stages of completion in the Industrial Development Zone.  The company has also tendered for other projects outside of Coega, but still in the Port Elizabeth area.

SPRAY PAVE
Spray PaveIn 2006 Basil Read acquired a controlling interest in Spray Pave, a family-owned business founded in 1981.  Spray Pave is a supplier and sprayer of bituminous products and services to the road building and waterproofing industries.  Based in Gauteng, the company offers international-standard technology and a modern fleet of Etnyre bitumen distributors to clients across Sub-Saharan Africa.

Blasting and Excavating (Pty) Ltd (B&E)Specialising in drilling, blasting, loading, hauling, crushing, screening, plant hire and blast monitoring, Blasting and Excavating (Pty) Ltd (B&E) has a strong presence in the contract mining and civil engineering industry. This company is one of many new acquisitions by Basil Read.  From small beginnings, B&E is now the largest contract drilling and blasting company and foremost user of explosives in the construction industry in South Africa.

BR-TSIMA CONSTRUCTION (PTY) LTD
BR-TSIMA Construction (Pty) LtdBR-Tsima is a company geared to render a quality construction service to the North West, Mpumalanga and Limpopo provinces and was born out of Basil Read (Pty) Ltd’s regional strategy to establish empowerment partnerships.  Founded in May 2008, BR-Tsima secured its first contract in the July of that same year.  While this contract was the first under the company’s BR-Tsima’s brand, the partners had worked together on two successful contracts previously. 

It was this successful working relationship that gave rise to the formation of BR-Tsima.  Through its shareholders, BR-Tsima is able to offer its clients the highest level of technical construction skills and experience, as well as a proven track record.  The service offering includes rendering a construction contracting service in roads, civil engineering, and building.  BR-Tsima is also equipped in the area of design, allowing the company to offer clients ‘Design and Build’-type contracts.

CODEVCO
Blasting and Excavating (Pty) Ltd (B&E)Codevco was appointed as the developer of Cosmo City in 2000 after a proposal call by the city of Johannesburg and the Gauteng Provincial Government. The initial planning of Cosmo City started immediately, and the final approval was only received in October 2004. The pegging of the first phase commenced in November of the same year and infrastructural work commenced in January 2005. The first beneficiaries took occupation of their houses in November 2005. December 2006 saw and accumulative total of 2 978 houses occupied, a secondary school and two primary schools completed. The end of 2009 should see the completion of this project with the accumulative housing total standing at 12 500. The Cosmo City population should then stand at approximately
70 000.

ROADCRETE AFRICA
Blasting and Excavating (Pty) Ltd (B&E)Basil Read announced on 26 May 2008 that it had reached an agreement with Roadcrete Africa to acquire all shares in the business. Roadcrete Africa's core business is the provision of road building and civil engineering services, which is identical to Basil Read's Roads and Civils Division. This will ensure that synergies will enhance the profitability and competitiveness of the Basil Read Roads and Civils Division.

Gerolemou Construction / Mvela Phanda Construction into the Basil Read Group. Since its establishment almost 30 years ago, P. Gerolemou Construction has gone from strength-to-strength to become a successful and dynamic player in the building industry. With an excellent track record and a name held in high regard, backed by the managerial and building expertise if its directors and management, the company has earned its place among the country’s leading building companies. The company has over time completed a number of projects for the Department of Public Works and shall continue to foster opportunities in this regard. Mvela Phanda specialises in government work such as the building of schools, hospitals and prisons. At the same time due to the varied and diverse experience of the management at P.
